How AI Personalization Works in SmartMerge AI

SmartPrompt analyzes your Google Doc template — headings, sections, merge tags, and content structure — then generates an optimized AI prompt automatically. It identifies which sections of your template would benefit from AI-generated content and creates instructions that tell Gemini 2.0 Flash exactly what to write for each row.

The result: every document gets unique, contextual content written specifically for that row's data. A report card template produces narrative comments tailored to each student. A proposal template generates executive summaries customized to each client. SmartPrompt adapts to any template domain automatically.

In Step 4 of the wizard (AI Configuration), toggle AI on. SmartPrompt generates the prompt in seconds. You can review and edit the generated prompt before proceeding, or accept it as-is. Most users run with the default SmartPrompt output — it handles 95% of use cases without modification.

SmartMerge AI uses Google Gemini 2.0 Flash, a fast and accurate model that understands context to create personalized content for each row. AI content is generated under Google's enterprise data policies — your data is processed for the merge and not retained.

For large batches, SmartMerge runs AI calls in parallel to maximize speed. A 30-row AI merge completes in roughly 2 minutes. A 150-row AI merge with batch processing completes in under 10 minutes.

The AI Preview step opens a modal showing the AI-generated content for a specific row. You see exactly what the final document will contain before committing to a full batch. This is the checkpoint where you verify tone, accuracy, and length.

Preview uses count toward your monthly AI uses. If you preview 3 rows and then merge 30, that's 33 AI uses total.
